What is small world play?  When engaging in small world-play your child will be using their toys to create little scenes which will be based on both real-life and imaginary experiences.  It is different to imaginative play as play is it is usually smaller and more contained. Doll's houses, play farms and other playsets inspired by the real world are good examples.

Small world play is fantastic for pre-schoolers development! By adding a few extra materials it is possible to extend  learning even further.  Getting Ready to Learn has created a leaflet which focuses on some of the most popular pre-school toys eg farm animals, superheroes, ocean creature, moon play etc and gives suggestions on how you can enhance play with items that can be found around your home.  You can even help your child to create their own small world using a shoe box, on top of a table, under a table, or even just in space within the home.
